He always treated the soldiers well in order to gain their trust. This allowed him to come and go as he pleases. Not only was he clever before the murders but even during them he was sneaky. He snuck up behind the first guy quietly so he couldn’t hear him. The soldier was caught by surprise “while he only said ‘Oof’!”. Old Milon never left anything to chance. He made sure the Prussians thought he was one of them. The uniform disguised him and when he screamed “Hilfe! Hilfe!” they believed he was a hurt Prussian soldier. When they got close enough he killed them both. During the trial, he tries to escape punishment. When he tells them “we’re quits” he wants them to believe they are even. Before, during, and after the murders Old Milon gained the Prussians trust.
